Health Insurance Rewards – Earn Money for Checking in on Your Health!

Did you know that you could earn money for checking in on your health? Last year, I earned $25 for getting a physical, $20 for getting a flu shot, $20 for taking a wellness survey, and more! I’ve earned $200 last year with my health insurance rewards through Anthem! I’m planning to do the same this year by being proactive about my health.

Why Do Insurance Companies Incentivize Your Health?

Why would health insurance companies ever want to do this? Who would ever want to give out free money? Let’s break it down.

Benefits for Insurers

Insurance companies benefit just as much as policy holders if not more from offering rewards. For one, insurance companies incentivize your health with monetary rewards because they want to build loyalty and engagement.

Second, promoting good health will lead to a significant reduction in claims for the company. If you’re in good health and not visiting the physician for any health related issues, the health insurance company gets less claims filed by you and your physician, resulting in less payouts they need to provide!

Studies show that only 20% of Americans opt to get their annual physical even though the vast majority of health insurance providers offer it for free. They would much rather pay you a couple hundred dollars to do routine preventative care rather than have you file a larger claim with them because you get more sick!

Benefits for Policy Holders

Policy holders who are insured with a company that offers incentives for checking in on your health get a variety of benefits. Of course, there’s the tangible cash value that you’ll get for completing each requirement. But there’s also the benefit of knowing about your health and being proactive about it.

Maybe you had high cholesterol for a while but only discovered it while doing a cholesterol test for a monetary reward. Or maybe you wanted to stop smoking and making an action plan for your monetary reward actually helps you stop it quicker. Regardless of what steps you take to understand your health, something is better than nothing. Ever hear the phrase, “Health is wealth?” 🙂

What Health Insurance Companies Offer Health Insurance Rewards?

Various health insurance companies offer incentives for checking in on your health. I currently have my health insurance through Anthem Blue Cross and I previously had my insurance with Blue Shield. Both these providers had rewards programs that I was able to utilize and get paid for.

Here is a non-comprehensive list of some health insurance companies that I found offering rewards! There are probably many that I missed so be sure to check with your health insurance to see if they offer rewards. Comment on this article if your health insurance company offers rewards and it’s not on this list!

  1. Aetna Health: Aetna Rewards
  2. Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield: Health Rewards Program (login to your portal to see it!)
  3. United HealthGroup: United HealthCare Rewards
  4. Kaiser Foundation: Kaiser Permanente Wellness Rewards Program
  5. Cigna Health

These are just some of the biggest companies I’ve found that offer rewards for doing common health checkups like getting a physical, a flu shot, or tracking your steps.

Depending on your type of health insurance, even if you have one of these providers, you might not have a rewards program. Remember to check with your insurer and/or employer and browse around on the site to see if you can find a rewards program!

How Do Health Insurance Rewards Work?

Earning money for checking in on your health is simple! I’ve done this for Anthem for the past two years and previously as well when I was with Blue Cross Blue Shield as my insurance provider.

I usually check in the beginning of the year to see if the rewards are still available for the same activities. This year, I can get $25 for a physical, $20 for a cholesterol test, and $20 for a flu shot so I scheduled all of those for February. I am also keeping track of my steps and logging my workouts because for every 50,000 steps, I get paid $2 up to $60!

These rewards are usually once per insurance cycle so once you’ve reached the max rewards you can achieve, you can’t earn any more. For me with Anthem, that’s $200.

What Ways Can I Earn Money With Health Insurance Rewards?

The easiest ways on my dashboard are getting a physical, filling out an assessment, and getting the flu shot. A physical and flu shot are things I get every year anyway (and are covered by health insurance) so getting paid $40 to do both of them is awesome!

Some other less common methods (but still very common!) are getting an eye exam, getting a cholesterol test, and getting a mammogram. I didn’t get an eye exam or a mammogram last year but I decided to get a cholesterol test and I got paid $20 to do it!

I personally earned the maximum amount of $200 last year and was cashed out in a Visa gift card. That’s $200 extra in free cash just for checking in on my health. Super easy, anyone can do it. 🙂

Earn Money With Health Insurance Rewards – Summary

Earning money for being healthy is a win win. Look up your health insurance provider and see what programs they offer. Health insurance providers want you to do this so don’t hesitate to reach out and ask if they have a rewards program if you can’t find it yourself.
